01 ABOUT THE PROJECT
MOYA: Researcher. Frazzled. Figuring out next steps. Type A and type Z.
DUMAS: An independent grad student. She has time for everyone but herself. MOLLY: Smart... but she finds herself in situations only Molly can conceive.
Shifting Space is a dramedy that follows Moya (Sophia Abrams), Dumas (Zenzelé Clarke), and Molly (Mariama Condé), three friends in their twenties, over the course of three weeks.
The story explores their triumphs and setbacks, the tension between stillness and motion, the liminal space between adulthood and youth, and the intersection of art and life.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Shifting Space emerged from a desire to create a film amongst community. This slice-of-life, character-driven movie explores what it means to be curious about the what it means to be a part of a diaspora.
The film is inspired by:
- The motto of Just Above Midtown: “Let’s Just Do It Ourselves.”
- ‘Girlfriends’ by Claudia Weill
- ‘Appropriate Behavior’ by Desiree Akhavan
- ‘Medicine for Melancholy’ by Barry Jenkins
- bell hooks’ “the oppositional gaze” | pdf
I bring care, dedication, nuance and honesty to this story with my curatorial, documentary, and archival background.More information can be found on my personal website:

The project’s impetus was to create a project filmmakers can work on from beginning to end, and we’re doing it!
